It's fair to say Chelsea haven't had the most exciting transfer window so far.

The Blues have only confirmed one major signing - Antonio Rudiger, who joined from AS Roma. They have also signed Willy Caballero on a free transfer, but that didn't impress many fans.

To add even more disappointment to the summer, Manchester United have signed Romelu Lukaku from Everton for a fee of £75 million.

The Belgian was apparently Chelsea's number one target for a few months, with Roman Abramovich expecting to bring the 24-year-old back to Stamford Bridge.

Instead, Jose Mourinho swooped in to blindside his old team, ensuring that Lukaku will be playing at Old Trafford next year.

That move means the Blues will have to turn to other options to replace want-away striker Diego Costa.

The Spaniard was told by Antonio Conte that he is not in his plans for next season, so will likely make a short loan move away from London before rejoining Atletico Madrid in January.

After missing out on Lukaku, Chelsea have acted quickly to agree a fee with AS Monaco for another of their targets.

On Thursday, it was reported that midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko will join the Blues for a fee of around £40 million, subject to a medical.

Finally, it looks like Abramovich is stepping up his summer investment.

The Frenchman played a huge part in helping Monaco win Ligue 1 and reach the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Although he caught the eye of fans across Europe, a former Chelsea great, Claude Makelele, has revealed that his career could have gone another way.

In fact, the retired midfielder believes he saved Bakayoko's career while he was technical director at Monaco.

"When I came [to Monaco] I saw him on the bench," Makelele revealed while speaking to Goal.

"He never played or was a substitute, I’m like OK. I'd seen a lot of video of him, so I come to see him in the training ground."

The then 19-year-old did not get along with head coach Leonardo Jardim early on, but thanks to Makelele, played a key part in his team last term.

"I talked with him, cleaned him the way he needed to be free in the head. To play as a midfielder you need to be 100 per cent concentrated."

"If it’s always a little problem here, little problem there, you can’t focus on your job you know? I talked a lot with him, like a full month with him every day, explaining things on the training ground."

If there's one man any young midfielder would want to learn from, it's certainly Makelele. Because of him, Bakayoko is now one Europes hottest young players.
