Kyle Walker's imminent move to Manchester City has certainly divided opinion.

The Telegraph broke the news that Tottenham had finally accepted a bid in the region of £50million.

It's a deal that has essentially re-defined the going rate for a top full-back, equalling the world record for a defender that PSG paid for David Luiz three years ago.

The England international had a difficult end to last season as he lost his place to Kieran Trippier for the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, as well as key Premier League games against Arsenal and Manchester United.

There were rumours of a rift with Mauricio Pochettino too, as it appeared that the defender was struggling to fulfil the notoriously high standards the Spurs manager expects of his players when it comes to fitness and discipline.

So, in truth, his switch to City comes as little surprise - especially given Pep Guardiola's problems at full-back in his maiden campaign.

City's need is all the more urgent having released Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

Tottenham knew that, and Daniel Levy used the situation to up Walker's price tag.

The Lilywhites chairman simply cannot afford for other clubs to think Spurs are easy pickings.

City's cheeky offer

Levy insists Eric Dier is not for sale amid reported interest from Manchester United, as the big worry now is that other players could follow Walker - who will double his wages at his new club - out the door.

In fact, the London Evening Standard have revealed that City also made a cheeky last minute enquiry about Danny Rose. Unsurprisingly, it was knocked back immediately.

The left-back hasn't played since January and will miss the start of next season due to a knee injury, yet that hasn't decreased his value long-term.

If City thought they had Spurs on the ropes, they were wrong. The north Londoners always seemed content to sell Walker, and were simply waiting for the right price.

Things will not be so easy for clubs interested in the likes of Rose, Dele Alli, or Harry Kane.

Besides, both Walker and Rose improved tremendously under Pochettino's guidance. It'll be interesting to see how Guardiola manages Walker defensively, but he can't count on his former full-back partner joining him in the north-west.

City will now have to go all out to sign Monaco's Benjamin Mendy instead.
