Samoa Joe tried and failed to dethrone Brock Lesnar on Sunday at the inaugural Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view in Dallas, and focus now turns to who The Beast Incarnate will battle next.

While we do have the SmackDown-exclusive Battleground event to get out of the way first, the red brand can now fully shift their focus to August in Brooklyn where the Barclays Center plays host to the annual SummerSlam event.

UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP

It was thought that the main event for the show was pretty much set in stone a few weeks ago, when Roman Reigns’ massive announcement saw him announce himself as the number one contender for the Universal Championship.

However, as general manager Kurt Angle revealed earlier this week on Monday Night RAW, The Big Dog must battle Samoa Joe to decide which of them advances to the main event of SummerSlam to take on The Beast for the biggest prize on RAW.

It’s been claimed by numerous sources that Vince McMahon has brought forward the speculated WrestleMania 34 main event between Lesnar and Reigns and will instead have it at the biggest part of the summer instead.

However, Billi Bhatti of The Dirty Sheets Podcast has revealed that isn’t the case.

FATAL FOUR-WAY

Revealing the news over on Sportskeeda, Billi has claimed that WWE always planned to have a Fatal Four-Way match for the Universal Championship, originally featuring Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Finn Balor and Seth Rollins.

Then, the plan switched to Lesnar battling The Monster Among Men, but WWE has reverted to a Fatal Four-Way but Balor and Rollins have been dropped from the line-up to pave the way for Reigns and Samoa Joe.

It does seem like this is the way things will be playing out, as Joe and Reigns do battle on RAW next week and the expectation is that Strowman will make his presence be felt in the match, following on from his brutal contest against Reigns at Great Balls of Fire.

So, it only makes sense to throw all four of them into a blockbuster contest but it also means The Kingslayer and Balor miss out on a title match, one year on from their brilliant contest which saw The Demon be crowned the first-ever Universal Champion.

Balor is expected to go up against Bray Wyatt, while it’s unclear what role Rollins will play on the night.

With John Cena looking to bag WWE Championship number 17 over on SmackDown LIVE, RAW could certainly trump that title match with this incredible Fatal Four-Way.
