It appears that we are not getting a dream match at this year’s SummerSlam.

Since AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura have joined WWE, fans have wanted them to wrestle each other inside of a WWE ring. It should be noted that they have wrestled before.

If you recall, Styles and Nakamura had some classic matches in New Japan Pro Wrestling, most notably in January of 2016 at the Wrestle Kingdom 10 event in the Tokyo Dome for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. Styles came up short in the match as Nakamura retained the championship.

After that event, Styles ended up signing up with WWE and started right away on the main roster on the Raw brand. On the flip side, Nakamura followed the former WWE Champion and later signed with WWE. He was placed in NXT where he would later become the NXT Champion.

Now that Nakamura is on the main roster and both Superstars are featured on SmackDown Live, fans believe now is the right time to see them wrestle each other again. They have teamed up together on SmackDown Live and even competed in a Money in the Bank Ladder Match at this year’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view event in June. However, the two Superstars have yet to compete against each other in a singles match.

Most people would think that them having a match at this year’s SummerSlam event, which takes place on Sunday, August 20th in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center, would make sense.

There is one small problem, and that is a recent report that has surfaced online. Dave Meltzer noted in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE is not planning to have the match take place anytime soon.

While discussing WWE’s plans for Styles at SummerSlam on Thursday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted that Nakamura vs. Styles isn’t being planned for this year’s event in Brooklyn. Here is what he had to say (transcript courtesy of Wrestling Rumors):

“They’re not going in that direction at all,” said Meltzer regarding a possible Styles vs. Nakamura match at SummerSlam. “I mean, they may someday, but they’re not doing that right now. Nakamura is working with [Baron] Corbin on the pay-per-view, then after that, I don’t know what they’re doing with him.”
