Kyle Walker became the most expensive defender in history on Friday after completing his move to Manchester City from Tottenham.City have paid Spurs an initial £50 million for the 27-year-old right-back - and that fee could rise to £53 million with various add-ons.The deal also means that Walker is now the most expensive English footballer of all time. Crazy times.“It feels a bit surreal,” Walker was quoted as saying by the Guardian following his big-money move to the Etihad Stadium. “I have been at Tottenham for so many years, but I’m excited about beginning a new chapter in my career. I can’t wait to get started. I’m thrilled to be signing for City.“With the size of the club, we need to go on and pick up silverware, get trophies left, right and centre, and hopefully that can add to my CV because I haven’t won that many things so far in my career. Tottenham was a great club, it helped me to get me to where I am now. I’ve learned a lot, especially under Mauricio Pochettino, he’s been fantastic with me.“But sometimes your path isn’t there and you have to move on and what a place to come and take a different path. Just win trophies - that’s all I’m about and all I want to do.”

City turned to Walker after Alves joined PSG

City turned to Walker after Brazilian full-back Dani Alves rejected Pep Guardiola’s offer to play for the Premier League club in favour of a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

And while Walker is an excellent alternative, football fans are in agreement that City have overspent on the former Spurs star.

Gary Lineker's 'salty' tweets

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has now had his say on Twitter.

And perhaps unsurprisingly, given his soft spot for his former club Tottenham, the 56-year-old has reacted to the news in a rather salty manner.

“Fullback, Kyle Walker becomes the world's most expensive defender at £50m plus. Imagine how much he would cost if he could cross the ball,” Lineker tweeted.

He added: “Don't get me wrong, I like Kyle Walker. He has many assets, and is a good addition for @ManCity. Not his fault of course but £50m is mental.”

Reaction to Lineker's tweets

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Lineker’s tweets…

Lineker then added, quite amusingly: “It is, of course, the first time I have ever questioned the value of Walkers anywhere.”

One thing’s for sure: people won’t be talking about Walker’s price tag next May if City end up winning the Premier League title.
