Jose Mourinho has never been one to back down from a fight in the transfer market.

Even earlier this summer when Chelsea looked odds-on to purchase Romelu Lukaku, Mourinho and Man United jumped the queue to secure the services of the former Everton striker.

And despite the various knock backs, his desire to bring Ivan Perisic to Old Trafford too hasn't wavered once.

The Red Devils have been trying to sign the Croatian star from Inter Milan since the window opened but have so far failed to agree on a fee with the Serie A side.

United's hierarchy have been unwilling to meet Inter's £50 million price tag which has caused negotiations to drag on at a seriously slow rate.

Then more recently it was reported Inter had taken a shine to Anthony Martial and had tried to propose a straight swap for Perisic.

Unsurprisingly, Mourinho rejected that offer but is apparently ready to gift Inter two other members of his first team squad as sweeteners for the Perisic deal.

According to The Mirror, the Man United boss will let Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling move to the San Siro.

Darmian has been regularly linked with a return to Italy during his time at United and has never really convinced supporters he can be a regular first-choice full-back so Inter may well represent a tempting prospect.

Smalling has seen his stock at Old Trafford decline at a steady rate throughout Mourinho's tenure.

Following Victor Lindelof's arrival, the England international could well be deemed surplus to requirements for the upcoming campaign.

Whether a move abroad would appeal to him, however, is not yet known.

Nevertheless, it is further evidence to suggest Mourinho is not going to give up on Perisic just yet.

With United's pre-season tour of America now in full swing, the Portuguese manager will be eager to bring the 28-year-old on board as soon as possible.

They played their first game against LA Galaxy in the early hours of last night and face further tests against Real Salt Lake, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona before the 2017/18 campaign properly gets underway.
