Diego Costa's Chelsea career has been over for quite some time.

Ever since his training ground row with Antonio Conte in January, it's been clear his days at Stamford Bridge were numbered.

The striker finished the season as the Blues' top scorer, but just days after the end of the campaign, he received a text from Conte to inform him he wasn't in his plans.

Brutal, perhaps, but it got the message across.

If there was any hope the pair could reconcile their differences, then that's disappeared with Costa's latest Instagram activity.

The Spanish international was seen wearing an Atletico Madrid top and told Cesc Fabregas to "give Conte a hug" - so, that relationship's well and truly dead in the water.

Conte won't be too worried, though, as he'll have stopped caring about Costa a while ago.

Chelsea's priority now is finding a replacement. Romelu Lukaku would have been ideal, but Manchester United beat them to it on that one.

Roman Abramovich can't afford to lick his wounds for too long. Even if the outcome of the Lukaku saga was disappointing, Chelsea need to come up with alternatives.

The Telegraph have suggested they are keeping their options open and are happy to bide their time.

The newspaper report that there are four main targets Conte is considering and any one of them would soften the blow of losing Costa.

ALEXIS SANCHEZ

Remarkably, Chelsea aren't being deterred by Arsenal's insistence that they won't sell to a Premier League rival. The Chilean's future is unclear as he has just a year left on his contract - and he still hasn't returned to pre-season training with Arsenal.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG

The Borussia Dortmund star top scored in the Bundesliga last season with 31 goals. A move to China looked to be on the cards until Chelsea emerged as the favourites earlier this week.

ANDREA BELOTTI

The Italian would be an expensive option for a relatively unproven striker, as Torino are standing firm and Chelsea would need to activate his release clause - that's in the region of €100million.

ALVARO MORATA

The Real Madrid deputy was thought to have all but signed for United a matter of weeks ago. Yet, Lukaku's move has effectively ruled him out of his switch to Old Trafford.

Villarreal CF v Real Madrid CF - La Liga

Christian Benteke is another player being considered. However, he wouldn't be replacing Costa per se; the Crystal Palace frontman is viewed as more of a back-up.
