Manchester United fans will always have a certain affection for Diego Forlan.

It might just be nostalgia, but history has been rewritten a little when it comes to the Uruguay's spell at Old Trafford.

The striker's time in England wasn't an overwhelming success.

During his two years in the Premier League, he only just made it into double figures with his goal tally.

Luckily, his most famous moment came against Liverpool, so he'll always be remembered as a legend.

And United supporters still sing about him regularly at games.

"He came from Uruguay, he made the Scousers cry."

It's certainly been interesting to see how his career's panned out since he left England.

The 38-year-old was undoubtedly a top player. For some reason, he just never quite settled in the UK and so we never got to see the best of him.

Villarreal and Atletico Madrid saw his best years and since then, he's had a stint with Inter Milan.

What next?

That's where his career in mainstream football seems to have come to a halt. His next four clubs? Brazilian side Internacional, Cerezo Osaka of Japan, Uruguayan outfit Peñarol, and most recently, Mumbai City.

Forlan can't have many years left on the pitch, but retirement doesn't seem to have entered his head just yet.

Congratulations if you've guessed his next destination, and full marks if you've even heard of them.

The Sun claim he's on the verge of Norwegian side Sandefjord after watching them win 3-0 over Tromso last weekend.

Sandefjord head scout Terje Liverod explained, per the same source:

“I have known Diego for years and can confirm he is open to a move to Sandjeform and followed our 3-0 victory over Tromso in the Eliteserien online.

Forlan's in great shape

“We are working on a deal to get Forlan to Sandefjord.

“The opportunity to sign him is there, but we are talking about a lot of money, so we have to be realistic.”

However good he may have been in his day, it's still a bold call. So, what does Forlan have to offer?

“Despite being 38, he is the most professional player I have ever seen," Liverod added.

“He can add a little creativity to the squad.

“And, even if he hasn’t played for six months, he is still in very good shape.

“It would be an incredible signing and Forlan would completely revolutionise the squad as well as the entire region.”
