Eccentric manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed how Liverpool's new record signing made him utter the words 'what the f***'.

Mohamed Salah joined the Reds in a £37m deal from Roma earlier this summer and impressed fans on his pre-season debut last week.

Liverpool have also signed teenage striker Dom Solanke from Chelsea but have otherwise been very frustrated in the transfer market.

Their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita, both valued at £70m, has been fruitless thus far and appear no closer to landing either player.

Southampton and RB Leipzig have both taken a firm stance and Klopp recently provided a wonderful metaphor for the Reds transfer business.

“You go out and see the car that you have been dreaming about your whole life. You say ‘here is the money’ but they say to you ‘I don’t want to sell the car’. You say ‘but I have got the money’ but they say ‘I don’t want to sell’.

“They say ‘go for another car in another colour’ but you say ‘that’s ok but I want this’. Things like this happen in life, not only football.

Klopp says 'what the f***'

The Liverpool manager spoke about Salah's struggles at Stamford Bridge, having signed from Basel for £12m in 2014.

Klopp was blown away when Salah's Swiss club Basel faced Borussia Dortmund in a friendly six months before the Egyptian winger moved to London.

“A lot of players have shown it is quite easy to struggle at Chelsea. (Kevin) De Bruyne is one,” Klopp told the Telegraph.

“The only thing that we really ignored was what he did at Chelsea. When he was at Basel we (Dortmund) played them and we didn’t know him. It was ‘what the f**k?’. It was unbelievable. The moment I said ‘let’s go for him’ he was already at Chelsea.

Borussia Dortmund won the pre-season friendly 3-1.

“Then he struggled at Chelsea because it was too early. Then he went to Fiorentina and then Roma. The question is ‘what did you not see in him?’ because he played all inclusive football. He was quick, he played a lot of games, he created goals and chances and he scored by himself.”
