Romelu Lukaku is off the mark for Manchester United after netting the winning goal against Real Salt Lake on Monday night.

The 24-year-old, who cost the Red Devils a cool £75 million this month, rounded the goalkeeper and produced a routine finish following a brilliant Henrikh Mkhitaryan pass.

Relief for Lukaku, who was mocked on social media following his unconvincing ‘debut’ against LA Galaxy on Saturday.

The Belgium international, who scored 26 goals in 39 appearances for Everton last season, missed a couple of gilt-edged opportunities to open his account at the weekend.

At times, it felt as if he was almost too eager to get that debut goal.

Lukaku's goal v Real Salt Lake

Despite his unconvincing display, Lukaku led the line against Real Salt Lake at the Rio Tinto Stadium, flanked by Jesse Lingard and Mkhitaryan in a three-pronged attack.

He was only on the pitch for 45 minutes but it was a case of ‘job done’ as soon as the ball hit the back of the net shortly before half-time.

Mourinho reveals what he told Lukaku before his goal

In his post-match press conference, Jose Mourinho appeared to be claiming the assist for Lukaku’s goal himself, which might come as a surprise to Mkhitaryan.

The Portuguese coach revealed he had a quiet word with the striker moments before the goal as he drank some water on the touchline.

“I think it’s just nice for him, not important for me,” said Mourinho of Lukaku's first United goal, per the Mirror.

“When he came for the water, before he scored the goal, I told him ‘I love everything you do on the pitch. Don’t be worried about scoring or not scoring because it’s not important’.

“He gets behind people, works and presses well, like everything he does. It’s easy to feel it because he was my player four years ago and his evolution has been great. He’s now a top striker. The goal is just a detail, not important.”

We’re still not awarding you with the assist, Jose. Mkhitaryan’s pass made the goalscoring opportunity, not your words of encouragement.

Lukaku now faces City, Real Madrid and Barcelona

Lukaku will now be hoping to add to his pre-season tally when United face local rivals City on Thursday night.

He’ll then go head-to-head with the world’s best when the Red Devils take on Real Madrid and Barcelona before the end of July.
