Manchester City are supposedly in pole position to sign Alexis Sanchez, but that doesn't necessarily mean a deal will happen.

As the Chilean's Arsenal contract reaches its final year, he's no closer to committing.

Judging by his most recent comments, it doesn't sound like he's going to either.

"I have made my decision, but now the decision has to be taken by Arsenal," he said, per the Telegraph.

"It depends on them. I have to wait to know what they want. My idea is to play and win the Champions League. It's a dream I have had since I was little."

It leaves Arsene Wenger in a very tricky position indeed - should he cash in on the forward now, or allow him to run his contract down and leave for free next summer.

Well, Wenger is adamant that Arsenal won't be selling to a Premier League rival. And with Bayern Munich seemingly put off by Sanchez's £50million price tag, as well as his astronomical wages, City are the only club in the race who can realistically afford him.

As it stands, though, no means no. Arsenal are refusing to change their stance.

City can use the money elsewhere

There has to come a point in the summer where Pep Guardiola gives up and turns his attention elsewhere, and we may have reached it already.

According to the Manchester Evening News, City are now ready to put the money they would have spent on Sanchez towards a £100million bid for Kylian Mbappe.

The Monaco striker's future has been one of the most intriguing stories of the transfer window, yet it's no closer to being sorted.

City believe the world record fee attached to the 18-year-old is a little unreasonable, but it would be easier to sanction if they could rule themselves out of signing Sanchez.

They have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk - so, £50m that would have been for Sanchez, and £50m that would have been spent on Van Dijk, and they have their £100m.

Guardiola is not short of goalscorers as he already has Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus to choose between. There's also the worry of sparking a bidding war with Real Madrid over Mbappe.

Fortunately, money seems to be no object to City, who have already spent over £130million on Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Ederson, and Douglas Luiz.

Should City try and sign Mbappe instead of Sanchez? Have your say in the comments.
