The BBC have released a list of their best-paid stars this morning and some of them are, unsurprisingly, earning absolute fortunes. It’s been revealed in the BBC annual report that Match of the Day host Gary Lineker earned between £1.75 million and £1.8 million in 2016/17.However, that’s still some way off the BBC’s top earner, Chris Evans, who took home between £2.2 million and £2.25 million.Earlier on Wednesday, ahead of the announcement, Lineker braced himself for the incoming abuse by tweeting: “Happy BBC salary day. I blame my agent and the other TV channels that pay more. Now where did I put my tin helmet?”

He then attempted to justify his astronomical wage by retweeting the multi-millionaire Alan Sugar, who wrote: “You should not worry. You are in a market where presenters are paid at going rates ITV CH 4 pay more than the BBC. You have shown loyalty.”

Alan Shearer's name is also on the list

Lineker, however, wasn’t the only Match of the Day star to feature on the list.

Alan Shearer’s name is there, too; although his wage pales in comparison to Lineker’s.

The Newcastle United legend earned between £400,000 and £449,999 in 2016/17. Not bad for a few hours work every Saturday.

Stan Collymore reacts to Shearer's wage on Twitter

Stan Collymore, the retired Premier League striker who has won awards for his punditry on radio since hanging up his boots, couldn’t resist tweeting after seeing how much money Shearer is earning.

“From a purely football perspective, Shearer's groundbreaking, in depth, insightful analysis is worth the £450k a season in my opinion,” he tweeted.

His followers detected sarcasm

However, Collymore’s followers didn’t believe he was being serious…

Collymore didn't stop there

The ex-Liverpool striker then added: "Stick Shearer in Neville role on ITV and make him work on analysis, presentation, personality, erudition. Would last 2 shows. #Ratings".

Ouch.

Although Shearer has undoubtedly improved as a pundit since he first started out, there are many football fans who still don’t rate him.
