Although his contract with Lucha Underground is coming to a close, a return to WWE may not be on the table.

Mysterio broke into the business back in 1992 when he signed with AAA, before signing with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 1995. After spending one year with ECW it was the Mexican's signing with World Championship Wrestling (WCW), WWE's then arch rival for a lengthy period of time, that really propelled him into a new tier of superstardom in the professional wrestling world as he stood out as one of the promotion's top Cruiserweight competitors.

He remained with WCW as one of the company's top stars until 2001 when "The Chairman Of The Board" Vince McMahon bought out the company.

After spending a year on the independent circuit, Mysterio returned to major professional wrestling programming when he signed on with WWE and instantly became one of the biggest fan favorites on the roster. He developed a strong friendship with fellow Mexican star Eddie Guerrero and went on to have a great career inside the WWE ring.

Mysterio won the World Heavyweight Championship twice, the WWE Title once, a three time Cruiserweight Champion, two time Intercontinental Champion, a four time Tag Team Champ (each time with a different partner), and the winner of the 2006 Royal Rumble. In April of 2015 Mysterio suffered a hand injury and took some time off in order to help in heal.

During his hiatus Mysterio was embroiled in a contract dispute with the company that led to his subsequent release. He signed on with AAA once again for a year before returning to the independent circuit as well as signing with Lucha Underground.

A report surfaced this week that Mysterio is on the verge of free agency and is currently in negotiations with WWE and rival promotion Global Force Wrestling (GFW) for an exclusive deal. Rumor has it that WWE is targeting Mysterio as they are in dire need of a hispanic star to help serve as an ambassador for the Latin American market.

GFW is looking to ink Mysterio to a deal in attempt to shy away from Alberto El Patron (a.k.a. Alberto Del Rio) as their top star due to the issues he has been facing outside of the ring. It seems as though GFW could be in the lead to sign Mysterio, as Karen Jarrett (wife of GFW frontman Jeff Jarrett) posted the following picture of herself hanging out with an unmasked Mysterio:
