Kelvin Gastelum is ready for his crack at the UFC's 185-pound championship.

Gastelum, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 (TUF 17), has had a tremendous career since entering the UFC, only having lost two fights via split decision. Gastelum has had trouble in the past making weight at his original home of 170 pounds, prompting his recent bump up in weight to the 185-pound division.

He won TUF at middleweight but decided to drop to welterweight after the conclusion of the season. After missing weight on two separate occasions at 170, Gastelum made his debut at middleweight by defeating Nate Marquardt via second round TKO. He then returned to welterweight but was defeated by Neil Magny via split decision at TUF Latin America 2 Finale.

After defeating former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 200, Gastelum returned to middleweight and defeated the now-retired former top-ranked middleweight contender Tim Kennedy. He went on to defeat another former UFC champ in Vitor Belfort, but had that win overturned after he tested over the limit for marijuana metabolites.

Now, Gastelum is heading into the biggest fight of his career as he is set to take on former middleweight king Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC on FOX 25 this weekend (Sat. July 22, 2017). Gastelum recently did an interview with Flo Combat and claimed that he would like a shot at the middleweight title with a potential win over "The All American" (quotes via MMA Mania):

"People can keep underestimating me all they want and that's just fine with me," Gastelum said in a recent interview with Flo Combat. "I'll keep flying under the radar and once they realize what I can do I'll be sitting there as champion.

"It's funny to me because I keep piecing up these guys I face and still don't get the credit I deserve. That's fine with me though because it's been the story of my career and I'm used to it.”

"I absolutely believe I'll be the next guy in the title race with a win in this fight and don't see why that wouldn't be the case," Gastelum said. "[Gegard] Mousasi is gone. [Luke] Rockhold is MIA and hasn't fought for over a year. [Yoel] Romero and [Ronaldo] Jacare are both coming off losses,” he said.

“I'm ready to be next in line and ready for my shot and I'm calling for it as soon as they hand me the mic. I'm ready to get this ball rolling and continue my push up to get that shot."
