Given Floyd Mayweather has been retired since 2015 and seemingly content with his career in boxing, a fight with UFC star Conor McGregor seemed a highly unlikely prospect just a year ago.

But, after rumours circulated of a super-fight between the two, it was finally confirmed in June that the duo will collide in what would be one of the most sensational events in recent history.

And with the fight now just a month away, Mayweather has revealed that three reasons tempted him into accepting a fight with the charismatic Irishman.

In an interview with TalkSPORT, the American revealed: “The fans demanded this fight, Conor McGregor wanted this fight, I wanted this fight – those are the three things.

“I think Conor McGregor is making a lot of money, I think I’m making a lot of money, and I think it’s what the fans want to see. So he has a chance to do something no other fighter has done [beat me].”

Mayweather, who is also bidding to win his 50th bout in his boxing career, is unconcerned about hitting that milestone.

“It’s not my job to rate myself anymore. For years I told everyone I was the best, I don’t have to keep shouting out ‘I’m the best, I’m the best’.

"My job is to go out there and to continue to rack up victories and let the people rate me when all is said and done.”

The American was also asked about the disrespect that McGregor has shown to him this week, to which Mayweather responded: "I don't worry about that, I have been there before."

Mayweather is now 40-years-old, and has not participated in a professional fight for two years.

Nevertheless, he is considered to be the overwhelming favourite by experts going into his clash with McGregor next month, and he seems to be incredibly focused as he looks to cement his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
