It's fair to say Jose Mourinho has been stumped when it comes to how to handle Anthony Martial.

The French international had a frankly miserable season, earning just 18 Premier League starts and scoring four goals.

While Mourinho has regularly criticised him in public, he still appears open to keeping him at Manchester United.

In April, he told a press conference:

“Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes, I think. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes, I think. But he needs to give me things that I like.”

Not only has the attacker had well-documented problems in his personal life, he's still only 21-years-old and has plenty of time to establish himself more consistently.

In the meantime, rumours persist that he'll be sent out on loan.

The £75million signing of Romelu Lukaku makes it unlikely Martial will be employed up front, with Marcus Rashford the understudy in that position.

Martial could struggle again

And if Ivan Perisic were to arrive, the former Monaco man would surely have to consider spending a season away from the club to get his form back.

Indeed, it's been widely suggested that Inter Milan would ask for Martial to be included in any deal that took Perisic to United.

The Serie A club aren't the only ones interested in him, however, though they're much more glamorous than the alternative being reported.

German publication Kicker suggest Wolfsburg have approached United about a potential loan agreement.

Wolfsburg's collapse

If Martial hadn't watched a game of football since 2009, he might be under the impression that the Bundesliga outfit were quite good. In fact, eight years ago, they were the German champions.

Since then, their demise has been quite incredible. Last season, they only stayed in the top flight by the skin of their teeth, beating Eintracht Braunschweig in a relegation play-off.

It's not for lack of finances that they've struggled and they've already made a number of key signings this summer - but it'd be interesting to see whether they can the best out of Martial.

Underlying it all, United have a very good player on their hands, who scored 17 goals in his first season at the Theatre of Dreams. If he stays, one of Mourinho's biggest challenges this season will be unearthing his talent again.
