It's beginning to look a lot more like a WWE return for Rey Mysterio won't be happening.
Mysterio has been in the industry as long as anybody, getting his start in 1992 when he began working for AAA. He then signed on with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) for a year before landing a deal with World Championship Wrestling (WCW), WWE's then-biggest competitors who were actually winning the ratings war.
It was there that Mysterio's in-ring career blossomed, as he was an integral part of the WCW Cruiserweight Division that saw so many great talents emerge from the class. Mysterio remained with WCW until 2001 when they were purchased by "The Chairman Of The Board" Vince McMahon, thus ending the Monday Night Wars. After spending a year on the independent circuit, Mysteiro signed on with WWE in 2002 and embarked on a great singles career.
Mysterio racked up two World Heavyweight Title runs, one WWE Championship win, is a three time Cruiserweight champion, two time Intercontinental Champion, a four time WWE Tag Team Champion (each time with a different partner), and the winner of the 2006 Royal Rumble match.
In 2015 Mysterio was sidelined with a hand injury and during his hiatus was embroiled in a contract dispute with WWE. This led to his release from the company and he decided to return to the independent circuit, establishing himself as a regular face and major star on the Lucha Underground product.
His contract with Lucha Underground is set to expire, and Mysterio is looking for a new home on a major promotion's roster. Currently, both WWE and rival promotion Global Force Wrestling (GFW) are bidding for the Mexican star's services. The WWE is in dire need of an ambassador for the Latin American market, and also gives Mysterio's son, Dominick, the opportunity to train at their Performance Center as he is in the beginning of his professional wrestling career now.
GFW is in a bit of a different situation, as they are trying to distance themselves from Alberto El Patron (a.k.a. Alberto Del Rio) as their top star due to his inability to stay out of the headlines for the wrong reasons.
Per a report from PWInsider, Mysterio was in Nashville, Tennessee this past Monday to visit his friends who were on Monday Night RAW. He had reportedly met with GFW officials earlier that day to negotiate a deal to sign with them and the report suggests that Mysterio "has a contract offer in his hands."
