With the Premier League kicking off in just over three weeks’ time, Liverpool have been relatively quiet in the transfer market so far this summer.

Jurgen Klopp was widely presumed to be gearing up for a busy off season after securing Champions League qualification via finishing fourth last term.

But the Reds have only welcomed £37 million winger Mohamed Salah from Roma and Dominic Solanke to Anfield – the latter departing Chelsea on a free transfer.

Of course, there’s still ample time for Klopp to make further additions before his men open their campaign with a trip to Watford.

RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita is thought to be his top target despite the Bundesliga club reportedly demanding in excess of £70 million for his services.

While their pursuit of the Guinean star could now be very nearly over, Liverpool have faced a sizeable challenge in keeping hold of one of their own top players.

Barcelona have stepped up their longstanding interest in Philippe Coutinho with a £72 million bid, as per the Liverpool Echo.

But the Reds have promptly turned down the offer to reaffirm their stance on a player they tied to a new five-year contract only last January.

Asked about the bid during a press conference in Hong Kong, Klopp has also added a clear message that will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans.

"Yes (he is not for sale), but that's not since this morning or yesterday, it's not been any different.

"Phil is a very important player for us. He's trying to get back his rhythm but there's no doubt about his quality. He's very smart both offensively and defensively.

"The nice news for us is that he's still young. He has improved a lot since I've been here and he can still improve a lot.

"I'm not surprised that any club is interested in players at Liverpool. The very important message is that we are not a selling club and that's how it is.

"We believe in working together and developing together. We want to make the next step together and for this we need to stay together.

"We have to create a situation where everybody is easily able to see which direction we want to go. It's really positive. This is a fantastic club and it's a good moment for Liverpool.”

Liverpool would suddenly look a much weaker side without Coutinho, though Klopp has taken a hugely positive step by addressing Barcelona’s interest in no uncertain terms.

However, the Reds faithful will be expecting a few more signing in addition to Salah and Solanke before August 12.
