Neymar will undoubtedly command an enormous transfer fee should he leave Barcelona before the end of his career.

The £48.6 million the Catalan giants paid to lure him from Santos in June 2013 is merely pocket change compared to what he’s worth in today’s market.

The Brazilian has evolved into one of the most potent attacking weapons in the modern game after arriving at the Camp Nou as a prodigiously talented albeit raw 21-year-old.

Neymar has chalked up an incredible 105 goals in 186 appearances for Barcelona while forming an iconic trio alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

But despite his crucial contribution during four years at the club, staying at the Nou Camp could actually be hindering his progress in the eyes of some.

The idea that Neymar is growing tired of Messi overshadowing his individual achievements has been well-reported by the Spanish media.

It’s not an entirely ridiculous proposition when one considers the dizzying heights Neymar is expected to reach given his frightening natural ability.

Last October, Barca managed to tie down the striker to a new five-year contract including an eye-watering €222 million release clause.

However, the ongoing speculation over his future is supposedly being monitored by several wealthy suitors around Europe, with Paris Saint-Germain expressing the most serious interest of late.

The Ligue 1 giants are understood to be ready to trigger his release clause by parting with almost two-and-a-half times the current world record transfer fee.

Such an offer would leave Barca helpless if Neymar wanted to leave, but club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has explained why they have little cause for concern.

"He has a contract for the coming four years and, of course, we count on him," he said, as per Goal.

"He's part of our team. He's part of this [attacking] trident [with Messi and Suarez].

"These clauses are impossible to activate if you want to comply with Financial Fair Play. If someone doesn't want to comply, then of course it can be activated."

Transfer fees have already reached astounding figures in the modern game, but PSG would be reaching unheard of territory should they follow through on their ambition.

A €222 million signing would almost certainly see any club breach UEFA’s FFP regulations, which restrict clubs to recording losses of no more than €30 million for the 2017-18 season.

And with the severest penalty being disqualification from European competitions, PSG need to tread very carefully if they opt to continue pursuing Neymar.
