Manchester United sent a warning to their Premier League rivals on Friday morning with an impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City in Houston.

Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola both fielded strong sides, though United's was closer to how they will line up for the 2017/18 campaign.

Summer signings Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof both started, while David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ander Herrera were all handed starts, too.

Statistics suggest the game was a tight affair - and it was - but it was ultimately two fantastic goals from Lukaku and Marcus Rashford that made the difference.

For Lukaku's opener, the Belgian latched on to Pogba's pass in behind City's defence, headed the ball past goalkeeper Ederson and produced a fine finish from a tight angle.

And for Rashford's, Mkhitaryan burst into the final third from midfield before finding the 19-year-old, who found the back of the net with aplomb.

LUKAKU OPENS THE SCORING...

...RASHFORD DOUBLES UNITED'S LEAD

United are second favourites to win the Premier League next season at 10/3 according to bookmakers - and it's easy to see why.

The Red Devils are in ominous form in pre-season, having also recorded 5-2 and 2-1 victories over LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake respectively in recent days.

It's the partnership of Lukaku and Pogba that fans are most excited by heading into 2017/18, but there's one other duo that's catching the eye.

Lukaku and Rashford - who started on the wing - were both sublime against City, sparking excitement that the pair could one day play upfront together.

Gary Lineker certainly thinks United potentially have a lethal attacking duo on their hands judging by his tweet after the Manchester derby (see below).

The Match of the Day host wrote: "Goals from Lukaku & Rashford have given @ManUtd a 2 goal lead over @ManCity. Lukaku & Rashford could prove to be one hell of a combination."

Nailed it. Lukaku and Rashford are both blessed with pace, skill and finishing but possess entirely different physical attributes thereafter.

Whereas Lukaku is strong and built like a battering ram, Rashford is slight and able to worm his way out of tight situations.

Put the two upfront together and Mourinho could be on to a winner, although Rashford proved against City that he's equally as effective when played out wide.
