Javier Hernandez looks set to complete a £16m move to West Ham United and Jose Mourinho believes the club's success in the transfer market could lead to incredible things.
Sold by Manchester United to Bayer Leverkusen for just £7.3m in 2015, the 29-year-old Mexican striker is expected to become a Hammer over the weekend.
Hernandez scored 37 Premier League goals for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho had previously claimed that Louis van Gaal should never have sold him.
The Portuguese coach is very impressed with West Ham's progress in the transfer market and was quoted telling reporters that he believes they can challenge for the title.
West Ham failed to build upon their impressive 2015/16 campaign and finished 11th in their debut season at the London Stadium.
Having completed the loan signing of Joe Hart earlier this week, Slaven Bilic also looks set to complete the £24m acquisition of Stoke City star Marko Arnautovic.
‘The credit of [Romelu] Lukaku and [Victor] Lindelof to be here on time, the credit is not mine, it is Ed Woodward and his team,’ Mourinho said after the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Thursday night.
‘I thank him for that fantastic work to bring us two very important players for us.
‘But we need a bit more when you see the other teams in the Premier League, like Man City, Liverpool and West Ham, the way they get players, good players, important players.
‘The champions have bought three fantastic experienced players.
‘I am thinking about West Ham for the first match of the Premier League. They have got Joe Hart, Chicharito and [Marko] Arnautovic. It looks like they are playing to win the Premier League, too.
‘The teams are fantastic in the market. I am waiting for a bit more.’
West Ham's highest Premier League finish was 5th in 1998/99 and Mourinho's outrageously high expectations of the Hammers probably won't be echoed by many Premier League managers.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are considered the second favourites for the title by the bookies.
They've won all their pre-season fixtures thus far and fans are feeling pretty confident following Thursday night's 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
