At the SmackDown exclusive pay-per-view Money in the Bank last month, WWE fans were given an insight into what AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura would look like inside a WWE ring, and it was fantastic.

During the Money in the Bank ladder match which involved these two as well as Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin, Kevin Owens, and Dolph Ziggler, The Phenomenal One and The King of Strong Style starred each other down in the middle of the ring to a huge jubilation by the crowd in attendance.

It was a magical moment as it was the first time these two had clashed with one another inside a WWE ring since they both joined the company 18 months prior. From what wrestling fans had witnessed outside the WWE from these two, they knew they were in for a treat.

The only time Styles and Nakamura had previously worked together even outside of the WWE was NJPW's Wrestle Kingdom 10 in 2015. The King of Strong Style won that match at the time, retaining the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

Speaking on the E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness (listen from 01:42:00 onwards), The Phenomenal One said that when he and Nakamura finally do have a singles match against one another in the WWE, it should be something big, and he would love to see it happen at WrestleMania, rather than it to be just another match.

To reiterate how important Styles thinks this match could be to WWE, he encouraged Vince McMahon to allow him and the Japanese superstar to have a standoff during the Money in the Bank ladder match to show the WWE boss how much the crowd would be behind this encounter.

The Phenomenal One, therefore, takes credit for the standoff happening, and rightfully so. As we all saw, it was an incredible moment, and it should definitely give Vince the confidence to award this match an incredible build up. What a fantastic idea it was.

As for when this match could happen, there's only really two spots for it, SummerSlam later this year or WrestleMania 34 in 2018. They could book it for the main event at one of SmackDown's exclusive pay-per-views, but it probably wouldn't have as big of a payoff.
