Jose Mourinho has made it clear he's not yet happy with Manchester United's summer business despite the acquisitions of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku.
A deal for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic is also on the cards.
Finding a central midfielder remains a priority, though, and it's there that the Red Devils have been frustrated.
Tottenham and Monaco are refusing to budge on Eric Dier and Fabinho respectively, and either could have added some versatility to Mourinho's squad.
Speaking to ESPN earlier this week, the Portuguese admitted:
"We always feel there is room to improve, and I cannot say that I am happy with our transfer window."
Fortunately, Ed Woodward has another card up his sleeve, and it comes in the form of Nemanja Matic.
As per the Daily Mail's latest update on United's pursuit of the 28-year-old, they are yet to actually agree a fee with Chelsea.
The Blues are holding out for £50million if they sell to a Premier League rival, although they'd be willing to accept less if Matic were to head abroad, with Juventus and Inter Milan possible destinations.
Abramovich has personally intervened
Nonetheless, Roman Abramovich has handed United a massive boost.
It's reported the billionaire has stepped in and cleared the way for a deal to happen, just as he did regarding Petr Cech's switch to Arsenal two years ago.
The Serbian would like to reunite with former boss Mourinho, and he'll be granted his wish in recognition of the service he has given the club.
It may come as a surprise that Abramovich appears to be doing Mourinho a favour - but there's a big catch.
The same source also claim a 'Lukaku tax' will be added to the fee, following United's hijacking of Chelsea's interest in the striker.
With the start of the Premier League season now less than a month away, United must be desperate to get the deal wrapped up as soon as possible - even if it means paying an inflated price.
