Jose Mourinho is still waiting on securing more of his summer transfer targets, following the arrivals of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United in recent weeks.

The Portuguese is undergoing a transformation at Old Trafford, in which he is desperately trying to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

And the early signs have been somewhat promising for the former Chelsea boss who tempted Lukaku to join the Red Devils instead of making a return to Stamford Bridge.

However, while United's £105.7 million spending doesn't sound bad at all, the 54-year-old has made it clear he expects the Red Devils chiefs to continue in working hard to secure further transfer targets.

Cross-city rivals Manchester City are set to surpass the £200 million mark on spending this summer in the coming week or so, should their two targets complete their moves to the Etihad.

And Mourinho is determined his old rival, Pep Guardiola, doesn't get the advantage in the title race next season by pursuing squad depth that will make them serious contenders, both domestically and in Europe.

It's been reported that United have submitted a £40 million bid for Tottenham's Eric Dier, while the Red Devils are struggling in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The Blues are reportedly holding out for £50 million for the Serbian, but United are struggling to come to terms on a deal.

United refuse to meet Verratti transfer condition

Instead, according to the Mirror, United have turned their attentions to Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti - who is also a target for Barcelona - as an alternative option.

The Catalan giants' interest in the Italy midfielder has cooled over the summer, and now Mourinho is keen for the club to pursue the highly-rated 24-year-old.

He would be a more youthful option to Matic and would enjoy the prime years of his career at Old Trafford.

However, both the Red Devils and PSG are stalling over a deal with the Ligue 1 outfit - demanding France forward Anthony Martial heads in the other direction as part of the deal.

The £56 million forward struggled to hold down his place under Mourinho last campaign but is understood to be firmly in the club's long-term plans.

Red Devils still hopeful of transfer

PSG have set out their demands with United, but the club believe a deal can be struck after Verratti appointed super agent Mino Raiola.

The Italy-born agent helped to bring Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Old Trafford in recent times, and the club are hopeful he can assist again.

After talks with Raiola, United believe they have a great chance of landing Verratti as an alternative to Matic, but it's also understood that the midfielder would, ultimately, prefer a move to Barcelona.
