Jinder Mahal shocked the professional wrestling world earlier this year when he climbed to the top of the WWE world.

The former member of Three Man Band (3MB) was released from the WWE back in 2014 and returned to working the independent scene. He was re-signed to the company last year when he defeated former fellow 3MB member Heath Slater on an episode of Monday Night RAW for a contract with the brand.

After a program with Rusev, Mahal was the runner-up in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 33 this past April. Shortly after he was sent to SmackDown Live as a part of the Superstar Shake-Up, where he won a Six Pack Challenge against the likes of Mojo Rawley, Sami Zayn, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan and Dolph Ziggler. With the win, he was named the No. 1-contender for Randy Orton's then-WWE Championship.

The pair went head-to-head in the main event of WWE Backlash where Mahal won, thanks to some help from The Singh Brothers, to win not only his first ever WWE Title, but his first singles title in his WWE career. He successfully defended his championship against "The Viper" at the Money In The Bank (MITB) pay-per-view (PPV) last month in Orton's own hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.

He is now set to make yet another title defense against Orton tonight inside the Punjabi Prison in the main event of the WWE Battleground PPV. Mahal recently did an interview with NBC News to talk about his journey through WWE and revealed that he actually used to be nervous when he cut promos (quotes via Wrestling Inc.):

"I'm very down to earth, quiet. I'm kind of a homebody. I have a little dog. She keeps me company," Mahal told NBC News. "I just like to train and diet and get my rest so my body can recover so I can wrestle."

"It's an entertainment industry, and I know you have to turn up the volume, which I'm now comfortable doing," he added. "At first I was very shy to talk into the mic and to talk in front of people."

"You put in the hard work and then the result comes," Mahal said. "It's not that you see the result and then you put in the hard work. I was preparing myself.

"There's a saying, 'force the result,'" he added. "I was constantly getting in better shape, really watching what I eat, improving on all the facets of my game, so when the opportunity came, I would be ready. You have to stay ready."
