Anthony Martial rightfully stole the headlines in the early hours of Monday morning as Manchester United edged past Real Madrid in their International Champions Cup encounter in Santa Clara, California. It was probably a game to forget, though, after their 1-1 draw saw them participate in a farcical penalty shoot-out which ended in a 2-1 win for Jose Mourinho's men.

GREAT PERFORMANCE

The highlight of the game was an incredible dribble by Martial, where he left Luka Modric, Lucas Vasquez and Dani Carvajal in circles; teeing up the opener which was converted by Jesse Lingard.

However, the game didn't end in the same manner for him as his penalty miss was in contention for one of the worst that was taken, but the positives did outweigh the negatives and it's why the Old Trafford faithful have called on Mourinho to not only keep hold of the France international, but give him more game time next season.

Martial has probably given the boss a welcomed headache after that performance, especially since speculation has linked Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic with the club, who operates in the same position as Martial and it's not something many have been pleased with.

In fact, it was claimed that the San Siro side wanted Martial in return, in what would initially be a loan deal.

Martial's immediate future might still be in the red side of Manchester, but it sounds like he'll have to improve in one area if he's to change Mourinho's mind about where he'll be playing next season, or how often.

CONSISTENCY

Despite leaving him on for the 90 minutes, Mourinho has claimed that Martial needs to be more consistent with his performances if he's to nail down a place in the starting XI.

Speaking after the game, he said: "Obviously, we want more consistency in his talent.

"I think today was positive for him, that's why I left him on for 90 minutes on the pitch.

"He was enjoying and was trying things, it's important in these friendly matches to try things and he did, so it's good for Anthony and his confidence.

"He's a young player, still time to learn, still time to improve, still time to develop, and it's also his personality.

"I can say that he is training better than before, he's working harder than before, it's a question to bring his talent more in a consistent way."

If Martial wants to remain a United player, then he knows what he must do to impress Mourinho further and become one of the first names on the team sheet.
