Benjamin Mendy is now the world’s most expensive defender in history after completing a £52 million move to Manchester City.The Frenchman has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, becoming the latest player to leave AS Monaco for the Premier League.Mendy’s arrival takes City’s spending on just full-backs this summer to a whopping £102m.Not that Pep Guardiola will care, of course. With Mendy now on board, adding to Bernardo Silva, Emerson, Kyle Walker and Danilo, the Spaniard will now feel that he’s closer to building a side capable of winning the Premier League title.Mendy, who will now join up with his new teammates in the United States, voiced his delighted after completing the move.“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester City,” Mendy said, per City’s website. “They are one of Europe’s leading Clubs and in Pep Guardiola they have a manager committed to playing attacking football.

“I am sure that over the next few years we will be successful.”

City’s technical director, Txiki Begiristain, believes the 22-year-old is also one of the best full-backs in the world.

“Benjamin has all the qualities we are looking for in a full-back,” Begiristain added. “For such a young player, he has a wealth of top-level experience.

“He is undoubtedly one of the world’s best full-backs, our number one target in this position. We are all delighted to have him here at Manchester City. 

“I’m sure he will prove a fantastic addition to the squad.”

Number of departures at Monaco

Mendy is just the latest first-team player to leave Monaco following the departures of Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

It’s hard to recall a time whereby a side that just won the championship became so disjointed in the summer. Leonardo Jardim now faces an uphill battle retain the French title this season.

He’s done well to convince Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappe, both courting interest from Europe’s top clubs, to stay at the Stade Louis II, although there’s still a month remaining in the transfer window.

Mbappe, 18, sent Mendy a tweet after his move to Man City was made official.

"Good luck to you buddy, I'll miss you very soon,” the France international wrote.

Mbappe appears likely to stay at Monaco this season, despite interest from Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but he’ll surely fly the nest in 2018.
