It’s been a case of out with the old and in with new at Chelsea this summer. At least in the striking department, anyway.

After three years ladened with controversy, Diego Costa’s days at Stamford Bridge seem well and truly numbered. And, for the small matter of £67 million, compatriot Alvaro Morata has been brought in to fill the void.

The arrival of the 24-year-old has bred mixed opinions, not helped by the fact that the Blues were initially fighting for Romelu Lukaku’s signature. Moreover, before Morata arrived in west London, he had had lengthily talks with Manchester United.

However, almost appropriately for this mad transfer window, both Lukaku and Morata went to the clubs the other was tipped to go to.

It begs the questions as to whether Morata actually fancied a move to Chelsea and whether it was a case of the next best thing after United switched priorities. From his comments so far, it seems that is far from the case.

In fact, to say the ex-Real Madrid man has been waxing lyrical about the Blues would be putting it mildly. Less than a week into the job and he is already buttering up the fans.

Ok, so maybe that’s a little bit harsh – he isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last. And his latest interviews seem to suggest that his admiration for the west London club is genuinely deep rooted.

The 24-year-old even has three Chelsea players in mind that, in a way, helped sell the club and encouraged him to don the famous blue jersey at some point in his career.

As per the Mirror, he stated: "When I was little I watched with my dad and it is incredible, a lot of goals and fast matches and I really want to play here.

"When I was little I saw Didier Drogba, Andriy Shevchencko, Fernando Torres and thought probably in a few years I will take this place, and now it is the dream to take the Chelsea number 9 shirt. I can’t wait to play at Stamford Bridge and in the Premier League."

Interesting choices, that’s for sure.

Citing Drogba is certainly understandable, though, with the Ivorian amassing 164 goals in 381 appearances during his time with the club. Moreover, this year was only the second time in Chelsea’s history that they won the league without him in their squad.

That’s not to mention that oh-so famous penalty in Munich, too.

As for the other two players mentioned, fans will certainly be hoping that Morata fares better. After all, like Morata, both players went into their move with glistening reputations and simply flopped.

They’ll be hoping he takes inspiration and not example.
