Phil Jones’ career at Manchester United has never hit the heights it once promised to.When the Englishman first moved to Old Trafford in 2011, it looked to be another inspired homegrown capture from Sir Alex Ferguson. Early signs and performances seemed to suggest such suspicions were rather accurate, too.Jones became a regular in the United side, securing the Premier League title in 2013 and accumulating 21 England caps.

However, in recent years, his Untied career has noticeably stagnated. Blighted by injury, his appearances have been restricted and he has gradually fallen down the pecking order.

Given the €35 million capture of Victor Lindelof and the flying form of Eric Bailly also, his future at Old Trafford appears uncertain. Some fans would even express their bemusement at how little he has been linked with an exit.

In spite of it all, though, Jones will always be fondly remembered for one moment in his United career if nothing else. That is, of course, his legendary headed tackle on Olivier Giroud back in 2015.

The moment came in a dry 1-1 draw against Arsenal that saw a Tyler Blackett own goal rob United of three points after Ander Herrera opened the scoring.

It could have been much worse for Louis van Gaal’s men, however. An ambitious long ball from David Ospina looked to have beaten Jones who proceeded to slip not once but twice, before rescuing the situation in inspired fashion.

Watch it back here:

But nobody can recall the moment better than the man himself and, this week, he has explained the incident in greater detail than ever before.

Speaking to MUTV, he said: "It was one of those things. I misjudged the ball from a goal kick. The ball bounced, I slipped. I tried to get up, I slipped again.

"The only thing I could do was improvise and try to head the ball away, because Giroud was through on goal. It looked silly at the time, but it did the job.

"Looking back on it, it was the slipping and trying to get up stage - that was the funny part. All my mates take the mick out of me for it!

"It was just improvisation. You do what you have to do as a defender. You have to put your neck on the line."

It was a great moment of passion from the Englishman and it’s been a trait for which he cannot be faulted. And, as long as Mourinho remains upbeat about his future in the team, he might get another chance to show such desire.

Besides, it might take something as special as a headed tackle as far as usurping Bailly and Lindelof is concerned.
