Earlier this summer, Cristiano Ronaldo was dominating the headlines after it emerged that the legendary Portuguese international wanted to leave the club amidst accusations of tax evasion from the Spanish authorities.
The former Manchester United man was said to be "angry and upset" with the allegations that he owed the Spanish government nearly £14 million and had his heart set on leaving not just Real Madrid, but Spanish football.
After reports suggested that Ronaldo would spurn lucrative advances from America and China, his former club Man United and French giants Paris Saint-Germain emerged as the frontrunners in the chase for the 32-year-old's signature.
Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals last season to lead Real to both the La Liga title and the Champions League, stayed quiet on his future during the Confederations Cup this summer, but Madrid maintained that their star man would remain with the club.
In an interview with Spanish outlet MARCA, CR7 revealed his intentions for the coming season.
"Winning important trophies with my club last year was great, just like the individual trophies, and to do it again would be great," he said exclusively to MARCA.
The fact that he refers to Real as 'his club' and that he wants to 'do it again' says everything about his ambition moving forward.
"You have to work hard, year after year," he continued. "I will continue to do it, football is my life, it is my passion."
With a £161 million deal to sign Kylian Mbappe seemingly agreed with Monaco too, according to MARCA, it has been an incredible week for Madrid already.
Should they land Mbappe and keep Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane's men must be the favourites to retain the Champions League trophy for the third year running and continue to cast a very recent shadow over rivals Barcelona.
The Catalan giants have failed to land any of their major targets this summer and many believe they are in danger of stagnating if they cannot inject some life into their squad.
Madrid has no such worries. With the retention of Ronaldo, a man who has scored 406 goals in 394 Madrid appearances, Los Blancos have kept arguably the best player in the world.
