AJ Styles has had a tremendous amount of success in his short time with WWE thus far.

Styles made his WWE debut in January of 2016 in the Royal Rumble match after weeks of rumors claiming that "The Phenomenal One" had signed with the company. He was an instant fan-favorite due to the longtime anticipation of seeing Styles, widely considered to be the best worker in the world at the moment, finally land with the WWE.

He won the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose at Backlash last September for the first time in his career. After dropping the title to John Cena, he then began feuding with Shane McMahon who he put on a tremendous match with at WrestleMania 33.

After their match, the pair shook hands and had earned the others respect, turning Styles back to a babyface. He then began to pursue the United States Championship, which he won at a Live Event from Kevin Owens at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately for Styles, he dropped that title back to "KO" at Battleground this past weekend after a controversial finish.

Styles recently joined The Sam Roberts Wrestling podcast to talk about his time in WWE, and also responded to the rumors that placed him in a dream match against Shawn Michaels earlier this year at the Royal Rumble (quotes via Wrestling Inc.):

"I'm just glad someone asked him because I actually pitched it, 'can we… has anyone asked Shawn? No? Can we? Can someone just ask him? All he can say is 'no'.' And truthfully, I respect him so much as a man because when he said he retired he actually did it.

"He didn't come back. And even I said, 'well, money talks, doesn't it?' Not to Shawn Michaels. He's a man of his word and at the end of the day all you have is your word."

Styles added, "it really doesn't do anything for anybody, so he was absolutely 100% correct and made the right decision."

He then revealed the one thing that he did on WWE TV that got him over with Vince McMahon - attacking The Miz on MizTV:

"Well, I think it was the MizTV where I beat him up. I think that's when he goes, 'whoa, okay…' It's one of those things where you've just got to… I don't know… I think Vince kind of likes a tough guy to some degree. And I'm not saying I'm Brock Lesnar, but I fought all my life."
