There’s been a surprising backlash against N’Golo Kante on social media over the past 24 hours following his performance in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

The French midfielder has been called a ‘fraud’ and ‘overrated’ by some Twitter users who were less than impressed by his display against the German giants.

Bayern raced into a 3-0 lead at the National Stadium in Singapore, scoring three goals inside the opening 27 minutes. Chelsea avoided embarrassment, however, by netting two consolation goal before the full-time whistle.

Kante didn’t have Nemanja Matic or Tiemoue Bakayoko alongside him against Bayern; he had Cesc Fabregas.

And while the Spain international is one of the most creative central midfielders in Europe, the defensive side of his game leaves a lot to be desired.

Kante had a tough game v Bayern Munich

As a result of playing in a two-man midfield alongside Fabregas, Kante found himself exposed.

Renato Sanches and Corentin Tolisso subsequently got the better of the indefatigable Frenchman, who won the PFA’s Premier League Player of the Season award last term.

“Unfollow me do whatever the f**k you want,” one Chelsea fan tweeted during the match, “Kante always gets destroyed when we play against a quality midfield.”

Is that really true?

Video: Kante can boss it against the best midfielders

Well, there’s evidence on YouTube to suggest that’s a load of rubbish, quite frankly.

A compilation video titled ’N’Golo Kante Destroying Great Teams 2017 HD’ shows the 26-year-old bossing it against the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

The last time we checked those teams all had ‘quality’ midfielders in their ranks.

It was a pre-season friendly - not the Champions League final

Aside from the Fabregas issue, there’s also the small fact that Tuesday’s match was a pre-season friendly.

People really shouldn’t judge players in early pre-season matches because ultimately they’re designed to improve fitness. This wasn’t the Champions League final.

You’d know if it was. Kante would probably have been Man of the Match.
