Pep Guardiola won't be placing too much emphasis on Manchester City's results in pre-season.The Sky Blues lost 2-0 to Manchester United but fared much better in an impressive 4-1 rout of Real Madrid. The club's pre-season tour of the US is ultimately just a chance for Guardiola to assess his squad before the start of the Premier League season in under three weeks time. One player who has made a huge impression is youngster Phil Foden. The 17-year-old didn't look out of place against Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera in the United game.City fans have been waxing lyrical about him ever since, even questioning whether he's done enough to earn a crack at the first team.Gary Neville caused a stir by suggesting that Foden would have a better chance of playing regularly at United, tweeting:"He's at the wrong Manchester club for getting a sustained opportunity. City have a lot of great kids. They should be playing..."
That comment was evidently brought to Guardiola's attention, and he was not amused.
Guardiola responded
"Which is the right club? It's a question to Gary Neville," he told a press conference.
"My history is there. I'm not going to put young players in the squad because they are young. They will be in the squad because they have quality. I don't have problems with that.
"The club is working well in terms of the Academy. There are many players with good prospects for the future.
"We will be patient with those guys. They are going to train with us most, or part of, the season.
"I thought even the journalist in the summer time were on holidays but I realise he is not."
Neville calls out Guardiola
In turn, Neville has responded again, hitting out at the City boss for suggesting the club's young players weren't ready for the senior team:
City's reluctance to put their faith in youngsters could soon be about to backfire, as wonderkid Jadon Sancho is ready to leave the club because he's concerned he won't get an opportunity, per the Mirror.
Pablo Maffeo, Brahim Diaz and Bersant Celina have all been tipped to make a breakthrough in the coming season, yet at the rate Guardiola is spending, it's going to be nigh on impossible.
Should Guardiola be giving City's youngsters a chance? Have your say in the comments.
