Wayne Rooney’s last competitive match was the Europa League final for Manchester United.Nine weeks later and the 31-year-old was back playing in the Europa League. This time, though, it was for Everton in the third qualifying round. It was supposed to be an easy victory for Ronald Koeman’s side against Slovakian side Ruzomberok as Rooney was ‘welcomed home.’There was a ‘sell-out’ at Goodison Park - although the majority of the Main Stand was left empty due to ongoing work to improve disability access. But those 32,124 people inside the stadium were gagging to get a glimpse of Rooney wearing Everton blue once again. However, the occasion appeared to get to Rooney as he struggled to make an impact as his side ran out underwhelming 1-0 winners thanks to a deflected Leighton Baines strike.Rooney looked off the pace throughout the 90 minutes and did very little to excite Everton fans about his return. In fact, his biggest impact came towards the end of the second-half when he lined up a shot from 25-yards.England’s record goalscorer saw his name on the back pages of every newspaper and tried his luck.Unfortunately, his shot was, well, terrible.

Rooney on his return
Despite a pretty poor display, Rooney was just glad to back wearing an Everton shirt once again.
"It's something I've been looking forward to for the last few weeks," he said after the match.
"It's obviously great to be at Goodison wearing the blue shirt, it was a great feeling. But it was an important game for us so I had to put my emotions to one side. I've done that now and can get down to focusing more on the football.
"It's very early on in the season... I know we can play better but it's important to win and get the clean sheet.
"Getting the goal gave us a sense of relief and control of the game."
