It was supposed to the perfect homecoming for Wayne Rooney but it didn’t quite go to plan.Everton’s Europa League qualifier against Slovakian side Ruzomberok was expected to be a comfortable victory to kick-start their season, with Rooney getting himself on the scoresheet during his second debut. However, Ronald Koeman’s side struggled to break down their opponents and could only run out 1-0 winners thanks to a deflected strike from Leighton Baines. As for Rooney, the less said about his performance the better. The 31-year-old looked off the pace throughout the 90 minutes and the below shot pretty much summed up his performance:

Phil Neville backs Wayne Rooney

Despite his poor display, he had the backing of one former teammate - Phil Neville.

When asked what he thought of Rooney’s first competitive match back in an Everton shirt, he replied: “World class - brilliant Simon," in reply to an Evertonian named Simon.

Sorry!?

To say that Neville’s comments didn’t go down well would be an understatement.

Twitter reacts to Neville's tweet

Football fans couldn’t quite believe what Neville had said about here are just some of the many replies:

While he would have been disappointed with his performance, Rooney revealed that it was a “great feeling” to be wearing Everton’s famous blue shirt once again.

"It's something I've been looking forward to for the last few weeks," he said after the match.

"It's obviously great to be at Goodison wearing the blue shirt, it was a great feeling. But it was an important game for us so I had to put my emotions to one side. I've done that now and can get down to focusing more on the football.

"It's very early on in the season... I know we can play better but it's important to win and get the clean sheet.

"Getting the goal gave us a sense of relief and control of the game."
