The eagerly anticipated fight between Irishman Carl Frampton and Mexican Andres Gutierrez has been postponed after the latter suffered a bizarre injury.

The fighters had been scheduled to come face to face on Saturday night at the SSE Arena in Belfast, but Gutierrez has revealed that he slipped in the shower and suffered bruises to his head, cuts to the face, and had also broken two teeth.

Bizarre indeed.

As a tough fighter, Gutierrez no doubt would have wanted to go ahead with the clash, but according to The Mirror, he had been advised not to fight by both his dental and medical teams for safety reasons.

The postponement of the fight comes soon after Carl Frampton had weighed in 1lb overweight.

Due to the weight issues, the fight would still have gone ahead, but as a result of coming in overweight, the bout would no longer be a WBC title eliminator.

Barry McGuigan, Frampton's manager, told the BBC: "We're all so disappointed. It was a freak accident. He slipped in the shower, smashed his face, the guy is concussed. He has a deep gash on his chin, his nose, lost two of his teeth."

Frampton's management team also told The Mirror: "Cyclone Promotions and The SSE Arena regret to announce that the “Return of The Jackal” event scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 29th July, has been cancelled due to an accident to Andres Gutierrez.

"It is hoped that the event will be re-scheduled but ticket holders are advised to retain their tickets and contact point of purchase for further information.

"We very much regret the inconvenience caused."

On Friday, Frampton apologised to fans after failing to make the weight for the fight, saying: "After a long training camp of intense preparation and trying to make weight, I was disappointed that I came in 1lb over the featherweight limit.

"I tried everything I could to cut down, but unfortunately, my body just wouldn't allow it in the end."

The injury comes as a blow to Frampton, who had hoped to get back to winning ways after his loss to Leo Santa Cruz in January this year.

Frampton will no doubt be keen to put this disappointment behind him and will be even keener to get back in the ring after not fighting for so long.

He and his team will now be forced to go back to the drawing board and hopefully he and Gutierrez will come face to face in the near future.
