It’s difficult not to be excited for Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather.

Even those staunchly against the cross-sports bout are at the very least intrigued by the result. That’s largely to do with the astonishing promotion efforts in the build-up to the clash and the sheer weight of both fighters’ personalities.

That’s in spite of the fact that the outcome should be rather predictable. One of the greatest boxers of all time is, after all, taking on a UFC fighter who has not one professional boxing match to his name.

But then it’s hard to see Notorious going out without a fight, let’s be honest.

Besides, if nothing else, the occasion will be both a spectacle in the build-up and in the ring itself. Just seeing Mayweather and McGregor exchange blows will have fans salivating after months of anticipation.

You only need to look at the theatre-like press conferences to ascertain that this is no ordinary boxing match. After all, these were events in which McGregor sported a ‘f**k you’ suit and Mayweather made it rain.

So, on that form, it’d be rude not to make a few documentaries, right?

Showtime have been documenting the run-in to the fight with incredible behind the scenes footage. Their newly released first installment concerned the aforementioned press appearances in Los Angeles, Toronto, New York and London.

It offers fans a glimpse into the preparation of the two fighters and gives them access to clips you would never get with any other sporting event. One such glimpse proved a bizarre, accidental meeting between the pair at an airport.

The full programme is below, skip to 16:22 for the airport meeting.

Despite catching separate flights, McGregor had to pass through the waiting lounge where Mayweather was sat in order to reach his plane. Neither expected to bump into each other, hence the awkwardness.

Money greets his Irish opponent, continuing to speak as Notorious simply walks on and goes about his business.

When filmed walking to his plane he then explains that this was because Mayweather’s family was present. The 29-year-old expressed his reluctance to disrespect his opponent in such a scenario.

If nothing else, it’s an interesting exchange between the pair, unique in being so unrehearsed, unplanned and so natural. It also goes to show that their rivalry isn’t all for show, even if cameras were still present.

McGregor will hoping that come August 26 this documentary series will be shining brightest on him. Probably best not to bet on it, though.
