We won’t be forgetting the last competitive El Clasico in a hurry.

Barcelona needed to beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in April to stand any chance of winning La Liga.

And they did just that in dramatic circumstances.

Lionel Messi scored with virtually the last kick of the game to secure an incredible 3-2 victory.

Unfortunately for Barca, though, that win wasn’t enough to overhaul their rivals in the title race.

But we didn’t have to wait long into this season to see our first El Clasico. That’s because the two Spanish giants did battle in Miami in an entertaining pre-season friendly.

And the two sides played out the same result as Barca ran out 3-2 winners.

It was that man - Messi - who gave Ernesto Valverde's men the lead with a deflected strike within three minutes.

Inside seven minutes, Barca were two-up as Neymar’s pass found Ivan Rakitic, who fired home.

Fellow Croatian, Mateo Kovacic, pulled one back for Real Madrid in the 14th minute before Marco Asensio finished off a brilliant Madrid break to level before half-time.

But Barca dominated the game and got the win they deserved through Gerard Pique.

Neymar swung in a free-kick from the left and Pique was left totally unmarked and was able to side foot the ball home.

What the managers had to say

So, one El Clasico and one victory for Valverde - and he reserved special praise for one of his players afterward.

“Messi is simply extraordinary,” he said after the match.

“Overall, I think my team did pretty good and we followed the idea of trying to dominate through the whole match.”

Whereas Zinedine Zidane wasn’t too impressed with his side’s performance.

“We started quite bad, two goals in six, seven minutes,” Zidane said.

“Obviously, there’s nothing more you can say about that, that’s a lack of concentration. … Overall, we can’t be too positive with the way things were.”
