To say Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier despised each other before UFC 214 would be an understatement.

Their rivalry will arguably go down as one of the best and most memorable in UFC history, with DC capitalising on Bones’ personal issues to claim the light heavyweight championship and continuing to doubt whether Jones is a clean athlete to get into his head.

NEW CHAMPION

Jones, on the other hand, focused more on how Cormier was a ‘fake champion’ as he was never able to defeat Jones to claim a title he never lost in the first place.

This could have all ended months ago, though, had Jones not been flagged for an anti-doping violation by USADA which scrapped their rematch scheduled for UFC 200.

Instead, Cormier has used that as more ammunition to criticise Jones in the build-up to the clash on Saturday night inside of the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, but it was Jones who had the last laugh.

After a couple of competitive rounds in which Cormier landed some heavy shots, one quick head kick changed the course of the fight as Jones became the first man to stop Cormier with a third-round knockout after some vicious ground and pound.

While the feud is perhaps squashed now based on Jones’ classy comments on Cormier, some fans have poked fun at Cormier’s reaction inside of the Octagon while others have brought up a crazy prediction Jones made three weeks ago – and it’s exactly what happened after Jones became the light heavyweight champion.

PREDICTION

In a battle of the mind games to get the upper hand before the fight, Jones admitted that he can’t wait to look across the Octagon and see his rival crying once he's declared the winner.

On that occasion, he said: “I can’t wait to look across that Octagon after the fight and see Cormier crying.”

Well, fans have been quick to point out that Jones’ prediction was scarily accurate, as Cormier was understandably in tears after failing to avenge the only defeat of his professional record as he watched UFC president Dana White strap the light heavyweight title around Jones’ waist.

Joe Rogan admitted that he doesn’t interview fighters after they’ve been knocked out, but strangely pressed Cormier for answers on the outcome of the fight, which is something fans have been quick to criticise as he struggled to put the loss into words.

Still, the raw emotion both men showed before, during and after their contest is why there was so much interest in this fight, and why fans love the sport.
