On Monday, Manchester United announced the arrival of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea with the Red Devils paying around £40m for the Serbian midfield enforcer.

The 29-year-old has worked under Jose Mourinho before and is viewed as the ideal man to bring stability to United's midfield.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan should thrive under Matic's protection and his presence in the squad gives the manager a variety of formations he can utilise.

Mourinho is the king of tinkering his systems to suit a specific game and with the Serbian international available to him, his possibilities have increased.

Here are three ways which United could line up with Matic in their side next season.

1. STANDARD 4-3-3

This is likely to be Mourinho's favoured formation for the upcoming season with Matic sitting deep alongside Herrera.

Pogba will be allowed to venture forward at will, acting as almost an unorthodox number ten, a position which made him one of the most feared midfielders in the world at Juventus.

2. DEFENSIVE 4-3-1-2

Should the likes of Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial flatter to deceive, Mourinho could opt for a more defensive strategy, a tactic he is likely to employ in big away games.

Matic would sit in alongside Herrera once again but with Michael Carrick added into the mix. Pogba would again be given freedom to create behind the two strikers, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.

3. ATTACKING 4-2-3-1

If Mourinho really is feeling a bit dangerous, he may opt to use Matic and Pogba as a double pivot, allowing Juan Mata to act as the team's playmaker.

It's hard to see Herrera not making the team but seeing as Matic would offer more of a defensive presence and Pogba is undroppable, the Spaniard sits out of this formation.

So there you have it, three systems which can be used to good effect with their new £40m man. Of course, they could have been implemented last season but Matic, on paper, makes them look a lot more efficient.
