The dream match that everyone wanted to see happened on Tuesday night.

That match was John Cena taking on Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event of this week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Cleveland, OH at the Quicken Loans Arena on the USA Network.

For years, pro wrestling fans wanted to see this match happen but they had to wait for it. Nakamura was competing in New Japan Pro Wrestling while obviously, Cena was on top of the world in WWE. When Triple H decided to sign the former IWGP Intercontinental Champion, fans were just waiting to see this match finally happen.

We all knew it would happen as soon as Nakamura was called up to the main roster from NXT earlier this year. Although many would’ve liked to have seen it on a major PPV (pay-per-view) event such as Summerslam, Royal Rumble, or even WrestleMania, WWE decided to put the match on free network television. It was a smart move as more people would’ve seen the match compared to it being on the company’s streaming service, WWE Network.

As seen on the show, Nakamura defeated Cena in a #1 contender match. Nakamura will now challenge Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship at the upcoming SummerSlam PPV event.

On Monday, betting odds came out for the match, which saw Cena be the favorite. However, on Tuesday, odds changed, and Nakamura was the winner. News of the winner of the match came out that afternoon thanks to Mike Johnson over at PWinsider.com.

What’s interesting is that WWE changed the original finish of the match, according to Cageside Seats. Originally, Baron Corbin was going to run in and cost Cena the match, which would lead to a match between the MITB briefcase holder and the former 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion at SummerSlam. Instead, WWE decided to have Nakamura win clean.

SummerSlam takes place on August 20th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets. Both Raw and SmackDown rosters will be featured on the card. It will be interesting to see how WWE books the upcoming WWE Title match at the event.
