Despite a very impressive pre-season that has seen the Reds score a chain of victories - including a huge win over Bayern Munich - Liverpool are still looking for a couple of big deals.

Mohamed Salah has hit the ground running and appears to be the perfect fit alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, with Coutinho operating in a deeper, creative role.

Andrew Robertson has also impressed in the early going and boss Jurgen Klopp has praised his potential following some marauding performances from the left-back.

Rather surprisingly, Dominic Solanke has also exceeded expectations this summer and has proved he will be in and around the first team, so what else do Liverpool need?

Klopp has been desperate to sign Southampton centre-back Virgil Van Dijk all summer and did not baulk at the reported £60 million fee.

However, the Reds were forced to back off after Southampton reported them to the Premier League for 'tapping up' the Dutchman.

After training alone so far in pre-season, the 26-year old defender met with Saints chiefs on Wednesday morning and told them he still wants to leave the club - and he desperately wants to join Liverpool, according to the Liverpool Echo.

With the Premier League season so close and Van Dijk clearly not in new manager Mauricio Pelligrino's plans, the south coast club clearly have a big decision to make.

Are they going to cash in on Van Dijk? Or be stubborn and watch his value diminish?

Liverpool would certainly become among the top favourites to win the league title if they could secure Van Dijk, but it is also understood that the Merseyside club will not make a move until Southampton give them the green light to do so.

The Reds are still cautious after the issues with Southampton earlier this summer and unless the selling club opens the door for the move to go ahead, Liverpool will not make a move this window.

So, the ball is firmly in Southampton's court and Van Dijk has made his position clear. Do you think Liverpool will get their man? Let us know in the comments below.
