Even though he is not under contract with WWE, Austin Aries still keeps an eye on their product.

It’s well known by now that Shinsuke Nakamura defeated John Cena in a #1 contender match on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Cleveland, OH at the Quicken Loans Arena.

During the match, Cena took a pretty bad bump on the back of his head and neck. After the match, Nakamura even apologized to him for it. It was a sick bump, but it appears that Cena is fine and not injured.

This leads us to Aries, who claims John got off easy. The reason for his comment is due to the fact that he was injured by Nakamura before. For a brief history lesson, on October 27, 2016, Aries suffered a large orbital socket injury during an NXT live event in Fresno, California in a match against Nakamura. He was out of action until early 2017 due to him having to have permanent titanium plates put into his face.

It’s clear that Nakamura was responsible for the injury that halted Aries’ WWE career. By looking back on it, if not for that injury to stop Austin’s momentum in the ring who knows how different things would have turned out for him.

Aries took to Twitter after the show went off the air on the USA Network and shared a gif of his match against Neville for the Cruiserweight Title during the WrestleMania 33 kickoff show in April. Aries sent out the following tweet:

Some could take Aries’ comments in a bad way, but he was just poking fun at a situation that ultimately was not serious. It is surprising that Aries was watching the show considering the fact that he demanded for his release recently. It’s always possible that he caught wind of the spot on social media and decided to send out the tweet.

Nakamura will now challenge Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam on August 20th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets. It’s expected that the Fatal 4-Way match between Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe, and Braun Strowman for the Universal Title will headline this event.
