£35m signing Nemanja Matic made his Manchester United debut in Wednesday night's 2-1 win over Serie A club Sampdoria. The Serbian midfielder was signed from Chelsea earlier this week in a deal that could eventually rise to £40m.Jose Mourinho signed him for £21m from Benfica in January 2014 and the Portuguese coach clearly still has a soft spot for the powerful defensive midfielder."Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player," said Mourinho upon re-signing him. "He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player."The Red Devils have now spent over £140m on transfers this summer, bringing in Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof from Everton and Benfica respectively.Mourinho's side appear well prepared to face Champions League winners Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup next week. The 29-year-old new Manchester United star massively impressed during his 45 minutes of the Reds final pre-season friendly in Dublin.Matic's presence gave Pogba more freedom and United fans on Twitter were overjoyed to see their new signing bossing the midfield.

Mourinho confirmed that Matic was not yet fully fit but, labelling him a 'genius', spoke very highly of his new signing regardless.

"He needs time but (his) experience, intelligence, a genius in the way he thinks - he thinks football," Mourinho said.

"We will help him to be ready sooner rather than later."

Speaking after the game, the Serbian midfielder touched upon his less-than-ideal pre-season preparations at Chelsea, where he was omitted from their pre-season tour of Asia.

“It was strange because the team has played and had a good pre-season.

“And as you know I trained alone in London, and it was strange for me, but I tried to give my best to control the game, give the balance and I think for the first game it was good for me.

“And step by step I think I will be better and better and I hope that I will help the team to achieve something this season.”

Next week's UEFA Super Cup final against Real Madrid could come too soon for the latest Manchester United signing but he should be in contention for the Premier League opener against West Ham.
