Nick Kyrgios has always had a taste for being controversial. The Australian has never been far from the headlines during a career that has been riddled with temper tantrums and expletive-laced rants.

As a result of all his curfuffling, Kyrgios has acquired himself a bit of a reputation, so much so that he is now being booed off courts after retiring with injury, as tennis fans struggle to ascertain how great his desire to be on court actually is.

Kyrgios pulled out during the first round at Wimbledon last month with injury, having done the same at Queens a few weeks earlier with hip trouble.

Now, he has pulled out of his third consecutive championship, having been forced to retire during his Washington Open match against world number 106 Tennys Sandgren with a shoulder injury.

The Australian received treatment on court several times and was even caught on camera having an altercation with his mum, seemingly telling her that he "didn't want to play anymore", as she urged him to try and push through - see the video below.

Eventually, however, at 6-3 3-0 down, Kyrgios called it, telling the trainer "I am done, I am done" before shaking the hand of his opponent and making his way off court.

A few members of the gathered crowd in Washington were less than impressed with Kyrgios, perhaps feeling that he made far more of the injury because things were not going his way in the match.

It is at similar points and similar situations within games that Kyrgios has shown his propensity for a meltdown in the past, and sadly, one can understand why some of the audience booed.

Australia has proven itself to be quite the mass producer of moody, brooding tennis players after Bernard Tomic announced that he was "bored of tennis" not so long ago.

Kyrgios now faces a race against time to be fit for the US Open which begins on the 29th of August.
