Did Everton sign Wayne Rooney for footballing or sentimental reasons? The Toffees agreed to bring the 31-year-old back to Goodison Park this summer, even though he’d struggled during his final couple of seasons at Manchester United.Rooney’s best days appeared to be behind him, but Ronald Koeman was convinced there was life in the old dog yet and advised Everton to hand him a £150,000-a-week contract. This was the perfect outcome for the England international, who was desperate to play for his boyhood club once more before hanging up his boots. And his second spell with the Toffees started with a bang: a brilliant 25-yard effort against Gor Mahia in Tanzania.Rooney continued to look decent in pre-season but, worryingly for Everton, has flattered to deceive in both of the club’s Europa League qualifiers against Slovakia’s MFK Ruzomberok. The veteran forward was mocked on Twitter during last week’s first leg for a woeful shot from outside the box.

But that pales in comparison to his embarrassing effort during Thursday night’s second leg.

Have Everton made a big mistake bringing him back to Goodison?

Many football fans on Twitter are starting to think so…

Ronald Koeman: We must improve

Although Everton have booked their place in Friday’s Europa League play-off draw, Koeman admits his team must improve.

"I'm really happy to progress with two wins and two clean sheets. But we know we can and need to improve in our ball possession," the Dutchman was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"We need create more than we did. It was a physical game and 90 minutes that the players needed. We are through to the next round and I'm really happy."
