Last week, Manchester United officially unveiled Nemanja Matic as their third summer signing, paying around £40 million to Chelsea to secure his services.

The Serbian’s arrival came after Jose Mourinho signed Victor Lindelof from Benfica, while he managed to snatch Romelu Lukaku from under Antonio Conte’s nose when it looked as if they were in for Alvaro Morata instead.

THIRD SIGNING

For that reason, it looked highly unlikely that the Blues nor Conte wanted to strengthen their direct rivals by offloading someone who has played a crucial role in Chelsea’s Premier League title winning campaigns in recent years.

It’s no secret that the Portuguese boss is a big fan of Matic and what he has to offer, and brought him back to Stamford Bridge some years ago after impressing in Benfica, and now he’ll be expected to thrive in the middle of the park alongside Ander Herrera and in turn, free up Paul Pogba a little bit more.

So, it came as no surprise that Mourinho was full of praise recently for his latest acquisition – labelling him a genius after watching him play 45 minutes for the first time in a United shirt when the Red Devils defeated Sampdoria in Dublin, Ireland in a pre-season friendly.

Leaving a title-winning side can sometimes be a tough yet brave decision to make, as there’s no guarantee that success will follow you wherever you and not everybody gets to say they’ve played under a boss like Conte, alongside some of the finest players in the league ranging from Eden Hazard to Diego Costa.

CHELSEA EXIT

However, playing for Mourinho again seems too good of an opportunity to turn down for Matic, as he went on to reveal that the decision to exit Stamford Bridge and play under Mourinho again was quite easy.

According to The Telegraph, Matic claimed: “The manager was very important, the decision was easy when you have Jose Mourinho and such a big club like Manchester United.

“The title is the biggest target and Manchester needs to be in a position to always fight for the title.

“With their history and with all the titles they have, I think it’s natural for them.”

Matic had been training alone in London as he worked to resolve his future, where it was certain that he would face a tough task of forcing his way into the starting XI following the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco.

Conte might not be too pleased, though, about Matic finding it easy, especially since he and Mourinho have already been taunting the other ahead of the Premier League season.
