Wladimir Klitschko’s heavyweight clash against Anthony Joshua back in April was one of the most thrilling fights of recent years.Ninety-thousand boxing fans were treated to a classic at Wembley Stadium and everyone was hopeful that a rematch would be arranged for later this year.Joshua gave Klitschko the opportunity to avenge his defeat in Las Vegas and pencilled in November 11 as a possible date.“I hope we can put a seal on it before the end of the month,” Joshua was quoted as saying by the Independent earlier this week. “If we fought November 11, starting August 22 is a three-month camp, so towards the end of the month, one way or the other (I'm expecting to know), because I've got to crack on.“It was just fun, it was just entertaining. I'd do it again, definitely. And going to Vegas opens the door for the (WBC champion Deontay) Wilder fight.“(Klitschko's) not going to top what he's already done but for 10 years people said he was boring because he was so dominant, but he got a lot of respect in defeat, so that should give him a real motivation (for a rematch).“He's got another chance to do it. I'd do it if I was him.”

Klitschko explains decision to retire

However, Klitschko has opted against accepting the rematch and has instead taken the wise decision to retire.

You can understand if the 41-year-old felt that beating Joshua was now beyond his capabilities after how the first fight panned out.

"Twenty-seven years ago I started my career in sport and it was the best choice of a profession I could have ever made,” Klitschko said.

"Because of this choice became a scientist, entrepreneur, motivator, hotelier, trainer investor and much else.I was and am still able to do these things thanks to the global appeal of the sport of boxing, my own talent, but most importantly, because of you, my loyal fans.

"At some point in our lives we have to, or just want to, switch our careers and get ready for the next chapter and chart a new course towards fresh challenges.

"Obviously, I am not an exception to this, and now it's my turn."

Klitschko sends tweet to Joshua

A day on from his decision and Klitschko has sent a tweet to Joshua…

“My HEART is at PEACE as I pass the torch to @anthonyfjoshua - the next generation,” the Ukrainian wrote. “Good luck little bro, I'm proud of you!”

A typically classy touch from Klitschko and one that will surely mean a lot to Joshua.

Update

Joshua has now responded to Klitschko's tweet - and you can see it HERE.
