An update on a match pitting Kevin Owens against Shane McMahon has surfaced online.

It was reported that WWE would book the former WWE United States Champion against the SmackDown Live Commissioner at SummerSlam. However, that is not the case. By looking back on history, McMahon has been known to get inside the squared circle and have some classic match. At WrestleMania 32, he had a great match with The Undertaker inside of the Hell in a Cell structure, which saw him take a dive off the cell through an announce table.

He would then compete in a traditional Survivor Series Tag Team match at the 2016 Survivor Series (PPV) pay-per-view event last November. His latest match came against AJ Styles in the opening match on the main card of WrestleMania 33 in April.

Two week’s ago on SmackDown Live, WWE did a backstage segment with McMahon and Owens. The segment saw Owens be upset with McMahon about booking him in a Triple Threat match against Chris Jericho and AJ Styles for later in the show. They teased a confrontation, which has led to speculation that a match between them may happen at SummerSlam.

On this week’s Smackdown Live, it was announced that Owens would challenge Styles for the United States Title with McMahon being the special guest referee at the upcoming SummerSlam event.

With WWE making that match official, obviously, a match between Owens and McMahon will not be happening on the card. Bryan Alvarez indicated on Wrestling Observer Live that the inclusion of McMahon in the championship match at SummerSlam would factor into a match at a later date between Owens and McMahon. WWE will presumably wait to until WrestleMania 34 next year to make the match happen.

Summerslam is scheduled to take place on August 20th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets. Both Raw and SmackDown rosters will be featured on the card. This event will have a four-hour main card with a two-hour pre-show.

You could make the argument that WWE could book this match earlier but WWE tends to save matches involving McMahon for bigger events such as Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, and WrestleMania. It cannot be stressed enough, plans change all the time in WWE.
