We have some bad news for fans who want to see Rey Mysterio return to WWE.

Over the last few weeks, there have been reports that Mysterio was talking to both GFW and WWE about coming in to work for them after his 90-day no compete clause with Lucha Underground is up.

This has led to a lot of talk online about what the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion should do. Keep in mind that his contract wouldn’t be up until after the third season of Lucha Underground is over on the El Rey Network.

Mysterio has had a lot of success while competing under the WWE banner, but you have to keep in mind that his exit from the company was not the greatest. If you recall, WWE held up his contract and basically froze it due to Mysterio being out of action with injuries. He was with the company for much longer than his contract originally called for.

Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated is reporting that WWE has passed on bringing the former WWE Champion back. As to why this is the case, according to the report, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was not interested in working with Mysterio’s representation, specifically Konnan.

For a bit of a history lesson, there has been some bad blood between McMahon and Konnan that dates back decades to when WWE invested thousands of dollars into the Max Moon character for Konnan. Instead of doing the character, Konnan decided to continue main-eventing in Mexico.

Chris Jericho recently welcomed Konnan backstage a WWE event but his appearance at the show did not help mend the burned bridge of the issues that existed between himself and the WWE office.

With WWE no longer being an option, Mysterio is expected to receive an enticing offer from Global Force Wrestling. It will be interesting to see what Mysterio ends up deciding. His good friend Alberto El Patron is currently under contract with GFW, and that could play a factor into all of this.
There’s no doubt that if Mysterio did join GFW then he would instantly become the company’s biggest star and be a fresh face on television. What could be an issue for a deal being made is due to Mysterio's desire to retain control of third-party bookings and to dictate his own schedule. Make no mistake about it, the posties of a deal being made far outweigh the negatives for a Mysterio-GFW pairing.
